A sword believed to have belonged to a Crusader who sailed to the Holy Land virtually a millennium in the past has been recovered from the Mediterranean seabed due to an eagle-eyed novice diver, the Israel Antiquities Authority has stated.
Although encrusted with marine organisms, the metre-long blade, hilt and deal with have been distinctive sufficient to note after undercurrents apparently shifted sands that had hid it.
The situation, a pure cove close to the port metropolis of Haifa, prompt it had served as a shelter for seafarers, stated Koby Sharvit, director of the authority’s marine archaeology unit.
“These situations have attracted service provider ships down the ages, forsaking wealthy archaeological finds,” he stated.
The sword, believed to be about 900 years outdated, will probably be placed on show after it has been cleaned and restored.
